Thank you Netgalley and Sourcebooks Bloom Books for allowing me to read and review this book.

When I first heard that authorscarlettstclair was writing a YA novel, I was concerned that I wouldn't enjoy it as much as her other books. I'm glad I was proved wrong. *Content Warning: Suicide*

When Stars Come Out is a dark YA fantasy with a duel POV between Anora and Shy. A Reimagining of Orpheus and Eurydice, this book will have you hooked from the beginning.

Anora is the new girl of Nacoma Knight Academy. Her and her mother are having to start their lives over after tragic events. Here's the thing, Anora can see the dead. Not only can she see them, she can turn them into coins.

Shy is Valryn and can shift between being a raven, human, and hybrid. He is part of a society called The Order that is in place to keep tabs on the spirits. When he meets Anora, he has a feeling he knows her but can't place it.

When a spirit at the school disappears, it starts events that no one could see coming. People will be betrayed, secrets will surface, and lives will be forever changed.

Is this my favorite book? No. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the uniqueness of this story. I love books that switch perspectives, although I did find myself having a hard time remembering who this chapter was about as it wasn’t a clear pattern of POV switches. There were other times where it felt like the characters had no common sense. I did really like the “world building” more so for the different groups of humans or non-humans introduced throughout. I wish the author did a deeper dive into the different types of spirits or darklings, but I guess there’s only so many details that can go in a book such as this without making it long and tedious. Overall, I would recommend this as an easy and fun read! I’m unsure if this actually spoils anything because I mention darklings, but I’ll hide it anyway :)

Scarlett never fails when it comes to a writing, like seriously, she could write the instructions for how to put cereal in a bowl and I would love reading it! And this book is just as impressive!! I was a little hesitant being non-spicy, (yet still bought the special edition

I was hooked from the first page. The premise was intriguing and the magic system very unique. There was some cliche stuff and Shy felt sometimes too good too be true. But that doesn’t matter, because it’s a very entertaining read keeps you wanting more. Highly recommend!

I got this arc in exchange for an honest review.

I went in blind, like so blind that I didn’t even know this was an Orpheus and Eurydice reimagining until I started reading some reviews. Knowing this doesn’t change my rating but does make the story even more interesting. I thought this was really good. I am a big fan of Scarlett’s writing. I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve read by her so I wasn’t expecting any less less from this one. This had like an urban fantasy eerie vibe going on.
