I didn't manage to become interested in this book, much less the new series. I will just stick with the Max Revere series from now on.

Really enjoyed this one. A new mobile FBI team hunts an elusive serial killer in a small town near Spokane, Washington hoping to stop him before he kills again in three days.

Motives unknown, a killer who is a meticulous planner and skilled at leaving no trace evidence behind. It’s Matt Costa’s job to track and find him before he kills again but his team is small and his resources few.

Kara Quinn is on mandatory leave from LAPD after getting injured closing an undercover case and staying with her Grandma in the town of Liberty Lake. She stumbles across a body on her morning job and quickly gets pulled into the investigation thanks to her excellent observational skills and the FBI’s lack of agents.

Time is short between kills and the reader gets to know the killer which helps ramp up the tension. His targets are within reach and the blue line is thin.

Lots of action, lots of suspense and the start of a series I look forward to following.

The Third to Die is the first book in Allison Brennan's new series, Mobile Response Team. It follows police detective as they track down a serial killer who they know very little about with limited resources. A start to a suspense thriller series with potential.

The Third to Die is told from 4 separate point of views. The Killer, which is a point of view I always enjoy. It's fascinating to be in their mind and see how they rationalize their actions and what makes them tick. Mathias Costa, the FBI Special Agent in Charge of the new Mobile Response team. He was intense, smart, and when he became frustrated he would transition into Spanish. Kara Quinn, an undercover detective, whose point of view I always looked forward to. She was confident, assertive, and attentive. Finally, we have the point of view of the criminal profiler Catherine. I felt her POV was completely unnecessary, it added a whole tragic backstory that felt outside of the main story.

The story felt like I was watching a really long episode of criminal minds. There was a lot of information dropping. Especially in the begging, they kept repeating the same bare facts about the killer over and over again. At one point the only thing keeping my interest was the actions of Kara Quinn. I didn't find it to be much of a mystery, I felt from pretty early on you knew the gist of what the killer was up to and you were just along for the FBI's ride to figuring it out and catching him before it was too late.

There was plenty about the story I did enjoy though. I enjoyed every minute of the repertoire between Kara and Matthias. They start the beginnings of a romantic relationship at least as much as they can during a murder investigation. There are some off page intimate scenes that are a built up perfectly for their characters. I also felt that the rest of the Mobile Response Team was memorable and I liked their character's stories. The end of the story was not what I expected which is a good thing. It was action packed and the tensions were high.

I'm having trouble rating this book, it's one of those instances where I didn't hate it but I didn't love it, yet I'm curious enough about the main characters to want to continue the series.

In The Third to Die Kara Quinn, the prodigal (grand)daughter and big city undercover cop, returns to her small hometown and stumbles right into a high-profile serial killer investigation.

I really liked the way the book switched perspective between the characters. It really helped to keep up the brisk pacing and gave the reader a window into everyone's heads. No boring procedural here.

I look forward to reading more in the Mobile Response Team series. At times this book felt like the first act in a larger work and I am looking forward to seeing where Brennan goes with this overall.

I would recommend this book to fans of thrillers, serial killer books, and anyone who loves an irascible female detective.

FULL DISCLOSURE: I received an ARC of this book from MIRA/Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

There were a lot of characters in this book, but once you figured out who the main ones were to keep track of that helped. As well, a lot of hints of other stories to be revealed as the series goes on. I liked it, not sure I loved it.

Excellent book! Can't wait to read more from this series!

Review: I really enjoyed this book. It was full of action and the writing was well done. The plot kept me entertained from start to finish and the characters were very well developed.

However, I did feel like the book was very fast paced and the book didn't wrap up everything, which is a little annoying for me but leaves room for another book.

Verdict: Overall, a well done suspense novel!
