The Lying Game follows four girls, Isa, Kate, Fatima, and Thea who attended the private boarding school Salten House. At the school, they became notorious for telling lies. Their poor actions resurface 17 years later when they receive a text from Kate stating “I need you” and they return to the tide mill where they used to hang out as teens.
The story is told from the perspective of Isa and switches between the present of Isa receiving the text from Kate and arriving at the mill to the past of her time at Salten House. Isa is a somewhat likable protagonist. She made poor decisions as a teen, but she has since done well in her career as a civil service lawyer and is also the mother of an infant who she travels to the mill with. That said, I did become frustrated with her because she was not open to her partner about what was going on.
Furthermore, I feel like a big downside of the book is the plot. You soon learn why Kate sent the text and you later learn more details, but I found the plot overall too slow with not much going on. I also predicted the twists, which was disappointing.

Isa gets a text from Kate saying she needs them. Isa and her daughter, Freya head to meet Kate. Isa is unsure what Kate needs or what is going on. Slowly, the girls (Isa, Fatima, and Thea) from the Salten house are altogether in the same place after years of not seeing each other. They come together after a body has been found in the Reach, a man being Kate’s father. Slowly the story comes out of Kate and Luc being in love (step-siblings) and Ambrose (father) won’t have it. Luc ends up putting heroin in a wine bottle and Ambrose overdoses and dies. The name of the game is, “The Lying Game.” The rules are simple. Don’t lie to each other. Kate had been holding these secrets for too long and has broken the main rule. How will the others respond? Will her friendships be saved? Will Kate survive?

After a spotty start, the book hooked me and I stayed up late to finish it but I became increasingly frustrated with the main character and then the author. As a mom myself, I couldn’t see some of this as realistic in terms of the dangers the main character pretty obliviously puts her daughter in...didn’t seem very believable and then, the ending is a bit allusive.
