Why did the author go into detail about a dog fight… in a rom com?
The author, in a couple of instances, was careless about the main character’s thoughts, to a point where it came across as problematic and harmful. The author also tries to be aware of current events… but can’t put it all together. Ex: “I’d like to light myself on fire before___” (in reference to a dark joke about hurting themselves to get out of a tough situation) and then mentions Israel and Palestine on the same page (did they not know that people have literally set themselves on fire as an act of protest?).  I was excited about this but should’ve known better I think.

I found the love story between Cara and Ali to be classic romcom. There was depth with Ali's back story, and a little with Cara's. I liked the time period it was set in and the resulting references, though at times it was a little forced or cringey - however, a lot of stuff from that time was. Overall, an enjoyable story with some well written moments and character development - though there was room for improvement.

An easy light read though the dialogue was cringy at times and somehow large issues magically resolved. The early 2000s setting didn’t work for me. I know the author originally intended for it to be in present day and shifted, so to me the references to the time period felt forced.

fatphobia, immature banter between grown ass women, not pulled in by the writing, and generally not feeling that the author is very inclusive.

It was ok, but i the protagonist so deeply unlikeable that i had trouble enjoying it.
