300 page slog for an 80 page bad ass payoff. still incredibly flawed but it pulled out a hell of a save for the finale. he needs yo work on expanding characterization in a big way.
world building in its own is as always awesome. we'll see if he fixes the issues by the second book.

A lot like the TV show "The Boys". It was fine, I liked the beginning and the ending but the middle felt long and bloated.
Listened to this on audio and really liked it. This book was fast-paced and action-packed! Brandon Sanderson builds worlds like no other and this was no exception. My expectations were a little lower because it is YA, but I was pleasantly surprised that it was executed so well. This book had it all: a cool dystopian setting, super powers, super villains, twists, a tale of vengeance, and good character development. The story of vengeance is simple enough but becomes complicated as David and the rest of the Reckoners try to understand why they are going after Steelheart. I loved hearing about the Epics and their powers/weaknesses.
Really awesome twist on the superhero genre. Lots of mythology building. The end is somewhat muddled, and some of the characters are very flat. However, the Reckoners universe is ripe with lots of stories and I hope that Sanderson continues to explore some of the small drops of the Fractured States that are mentioned here, including tying together Megan's history in Portland.
I really liked the premise of this story but had some problems with the execution.
The first was that the world felt very...videogame-like? I have a sneaking suspicion that a world basically coated in steel would have some very real impact on basic aspects of life which are never really addressed. And having the world in perpetual night would surely lead to high levels of depression and sickness as well as vitamin D deficiency. Maybe I'm overthinking it, but what's the point of having a cool concept like that and then not having it really affect the characters?
I also found it extremely hard to believe that David is 18 (19?). He didn't act like a teenager (except for his immature reaction to the female characters which was a much bigger problem for me)and the timeline kept tripping me up and pulling me out of the story. If he had been even, say, 25, I would have felt it more realistic for him to have done this much research, to have spent this much time gathering information, etc.
This book is clearly not taking itself too seriously and it's just a fun story that I can see people enjoying it for that, but the logical inconsistencies and the blandness of the characters just made it annoying for me.

SO GOOD!!! I've been recommended this author several times, but I'm not typically into sci-fi. This book was EXCEPTIONAL! SO intriguing, so different, and so entertaining! AND the internal dialog is hilarious!
