This book just blew me out the water. I was enthralled by everything that happened and every second I was just begging for more. The only reason why it isn't a 5 is more of a personal gripe. I wished the ending was a bit better, but that doesn't mean it's bad. I highly recommend reading this if you want to question your way of life and government.

I was never required to read this book in high school nor am I a fan of dystopian themes within my books of choice.
However, I am on a banned book binge & read this for the 1st time as an adult. The central theme and ideas around the story are both dark and realistic. I can understand why a lot of people have rated this book highly.
I agree with a lot of reviews around it being a slow start to world build and a slower chunk of reading in the middle that drags for awhile.
But, I am a someone who has to “see it through” when it comes to both books and movies & the end did not disappoint.
It was actually the best part of the entire read.
I watched the movie afterwards and they did a great job aligning the book with the film adaptation.
I would recommend this read to anyone who enjoy dystopian and/or political books or if you are on a banned book binge.

"Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past."
I've read this before but decided to revisit this one again in light of everything going on. I probably would have finished this sooner; however, I had to take breaks due to the current news cycle being A LOT. Orwell's book is one of those key pieces of literature that focuses on dystopias and social criticism; it was a warning published back in 1949 that I guess we didn't quite listen to... The concepts of stamping out individuality, editing the past, changing and limiting language, repressing sexuality and the family unit, constant surveillance, surrendering one's humanity under the guise of safety, etc. in order to establish control. The list, unfortunately, goes on, and it's a very unsettling book to read. I've read it during my preteen years, teen years, and now my adult years, and, while I've gotten new things out of it each time, the constant feeling of unease and worry remains.
