I really enjoyed the way that Grendel's violent tendencies are explained, not only in reaction to people's expectations but also his disappointed hopes for those not descended from Cain . Nice retelling. I liked the little modifications like Grendel's not being able to be harmed by weapons, which could explain Beowulf's desire to fight him unarmed. This deviates from the traditional view of Beowulf simply seeking an honorable, fair fight and thus matching Grendel's degraded views of mankind.
