Follow Me Back

3.6 AVERAGE

This was a dark and twisty book, and I loved this mystery! Can't wait to read the sequel!

Impressive and Disturbing.... (I received this book from NetGalley in return for an honest review)

I do not have a vast understanding of Twitter. I do not use it nor do I see the point in it. I feel like I need to disclose that before commenting on the book. That does not take away anything from the subject matter. The main point of this novel, You don't always know who you are talking to on the internet. There is both light and dark in this novel... mental illness, romance, heartache, fame, paranoia, true crime, and more. The main focus was predictable but the END, I didn't see that coming. The ending was a complete blindside and makes the entire novel worth reading.

That ending...whaaaaat?

Loved it.

5 Reasons to Read ‘Follow Me Back’ by A.V Geiger

1. You want to read a thriller with an ongoing investigation throughout the book

The investigation is a recurring aspect of the book and it’s not about one incident but several related incidents and people. This format is interesting and you never really know when the tables are turned in this book.

2. Social Media significance and the portrayal of its effect on the life of a celebrity

Twitter forms an integral part of this book. The male protagonist, Eric Thorn, a popular musician, lets us in on the flip side of fame in the time of social media. It’s a very interesting insight and while we might know the basics of it on the surface, this book shows how it works in its intricacies - marketing, personal life, fan-celeb relation, actual work of the artist.

3. You want a YA thriller that is more about the mystery than the romance and will have you guessing about things right till the end

Now, I am not someone who reads a lot of books from the mystery/thriller genre but I picked up this book because the setting seemed familiar to me - YA. However, I was afraid that it will be cliche YA and not really have a good mystery that will keep me hooked but I was wrong - it was brilliant. It had many twists and things I didn’t see coming. I was satisfied with the ending and that’s saying something because I’ve been deeply dissatisfied with teen thrillers (Pretty Little Liars, for example)

4. Fan/Celebrity Equation is a major theme

I have always corrected myself - I don’t love the artist/author/celebrity, I like their music/writing/character. Basically, I love their work, not them because I do not actually know them. I understand how a lot of the work is a reflection of their minds and lives but it’s not the same thing.

And crushing on a celebrity or fangirling is fine as long as its all innocent and one is not being delusional. But sometimes it doesn’t stop there. And that is unhealthy and that is dangerous.

5. Mental Health

Tessa, the female protagonist, has agoraphobia but the theme of mental illness is prevalent throughout the book and affects the character developments centrally.

Bonus Reason:

Wattpad Nostalgia//After by Anna Todd Nostalgia

I read this on wattpad but it’s a published book also. So it gave me major nostalgic feels as I used to read on wattpad all the time back in high school.

And for all the After by Anna Todd fans out there, the female protagonist in this book named Tessa Hart, reminded me a lot of Tessa Young in After. It goes beyond the same name, it’s their ability to be kind to those who are being jerks to them, giving the benefit of the doubt to those who have harmed them.
dark emotional sad tense medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: Complicated
Loveable characters: Yes
Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

I’ve read this book so many times!! It’s actually one of my comfort books and it helps me to get out of a reading slump if I’m in one.

This is a cute little fluff story about the fairytale of being mysteriously followed by your music crush and then falling in love via direct messages on Twitter. Great summer no brain cells needed kind of read! The story is told through tweets, direct messages, and police interviews. Yes, police interviews because Ms. Geiger tried to add a few twists with a traumatic event in Tessa’s past that caused her case of agoraphobia and Eric being paranoid of crazed fans. I was really enjoying watching the main characters interact through social media and open up to each other through their anonymous relationship online. But, apparently this is the first book in a series so things didn’t necessarily get resolved completely and that ruined this young adult book as a fun and quick little escape for me. As much as I really enjoyed the storyline, I am not sure I want to read another whole book (or more) to find out what ultimately happened.

I wasn't going to write anything about this because clearly it wasn't for me. But also decided against it. This book was just not good. It was very clear that it was a Wattpad story. It felt like really bad fanfiction. I had so many issues with this book. My first one was the pop star, this guy was just not a likeable guy in anyway, and the fact that he had fans baffled me. The fact that the author kind of insinuated grooming this fan was really just absurd and not sure why it was allowed to be published. Overall this was not my cup of tea and will not be finishing this duology.

Uses real-world contexts to create a very engaging horror story with an ambiguous conclusion. Some emotional elements seem a little bit swift to resolve.
