What a fantastic book! I absolutely loved every bit of it. From castles to more modern abandoned areas, this book is full of great information, and stunning photos. If you want to get a better idea of abandoned places in Scotland, and some of the history behind it, then you need to read this!

Abandoned buildings have always been alluring to me so when I seen this book on NetGalley, it immediately peaked my interest. This book did not disappoint! It has beautiful photos of various abandoned buildings in Scotland and as someone who has never been to Scotland and honestly didn't know very much about Scotland, I found this book to be really informative. This book has a wide variety of places shown including castles, businesses, houses, religious places and military buildings. This would be a great coffee table book and a great conversation starter. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys history, photography, nature (there are beautiful photos of the plants that have claimed some of the buildings) or anyone who has an interest in abandoned buildings. This was a really cool book! Special Thank You to Alastair Horne, Amber Books, and NetGalley for allowing me to read a complimentary copy prior to publication in exchange for an honest review.

Scotland has been on my travel bucket list ever since I read Outlander, and abandoned buildings have always intrigued me, so I jumped at the chance to read Abandoned Scotland by Alastair Horne.

Abandoned Scotland takes its reader on a tour through Scotland, from the mainland to Skye to the Hebrides and beyond. Amber coffee table books usually accompany gorgeous photos by fun facts. There are fewer fun facts in Abandoned Scotland, the information provided is perhaps a tad drier than I’ve come to expect from these books, but I did learn a few things and I definitely poured over some fantastic photos.

I especially loved the castles and the religious places, the lighthouses and the rural structures, in all seasons and against a vastly different backdrop each and every time. Abandoned buildings in fields, in forests and on cliffs, and abandoned boats and even midget submarines on the beach, man-made structures often increasingly reclaimed by nature, it makes for some stunning images.

Recommended to armchair travellers and anyone who is interested in the rich history of Scotland.

Another beautiful book from this collection.

Just as "Abandoned Ireland", the photos of this book are breathtaking. I could stare at them all day. They make me want to visit.

The book is organised by categories such as castles and houses, towns, industrial sights and more. The descriptions of each place are short and straight to the point, with information on when the buildings were constructed, who owned it, and when and why it was abandoned. It's both beautiful and nostalgic, and even a bit sad to see such beautiful places left to nature, especially small villages and houses.

Loved it!

Thank you Amber Books for the e-ARC!

This book shows the beauty of Scotland through a vast amount of images. Each also representing the many different paths of Scotland's history. I would have preferred a bit more information regarding some of the locations however this is a lovely book to flick through. Whether that is for discovering somewhere new or setting up for your next adventure, I can see this being a helpful book to many.

Gorgeous pictures of a majestic country. This book is dotted with information and historical blurbs. Concise facts with the primary focus on the pictorial story.

Old, abandoned architecture is a long-held fascination of mine. This book makes me want to reach out and touch the brick and mortar of these buildings—to feel their history whisper under the tips of my fingers. Of course the castles and cottages were my favorite, but there is so much to see in this book.

I'm filled with a sudden desire to go to Scotland!

Note: I received this book as an ARC. It is scheduled to be released Sept 14, 2023.
