This book is.... different!

I had no idea what to expect. The cover is mostly just strange.

And so is the book. My mind is rather torn on this one. It was while reading too.

It took me a while to get into the book. Then I loved it for a while. Then came some parts that I found dubious. And it got good again.
The whole book was like that for me. So I can't really review it very well. I think this is something everybody has to read and judge for himself...

This book is fairly unique. I really loved how the author used vintage photographs to give more feeling to this story. It had enough mystery behind it to keep my interest and left me wanting more. I'm impatiently waiting for the release of the next book and the movie.

I think it's more of a *4.5*. I really loved it though, even got the creeps a couple of times. !!!!Do not read before bed if you're a wuss like me!!!!

I liked it - a mix of thriller, mystery, drama, romance. But, I detest books that end on a cliffhanger. I probably would have enjoyed this book more if I read it in junior/high school.

This was...fine? Interesting world, I always like stories of enhanced/magical/peculiar people living amongst us. However, these teenagers acted like much younger children so much that I would get grossed out when they kissed until I remembered they were supposedly older teens. So it was fine

This book is amazing. I read a review of this not so long ago which said the book had pictures in it. So I looked up the book and saw the front cover (a creepy picture of a girl levitating) and just had to buy it. The front cover, together with the title and the blurb just make this an almost irresistible book. Once I started reading it, I'd finished it within a day. In total, it probably took me about three hours to read. The pictures are all vintage-looking, in black and white, with that creepy/dark feeling that the front cover picture gives. Most are of the peculiar children that the book is all about.

The story is narrated by Jacob Portman, a teenager who recounts his childhood years of listening to his grandfather's "tall tales" about monsters, strange children with gifts and other things. Jacob's family explain away the eccentric old man's tales by referring to the holocaust that he escaped, that these things don't exist, and that the strange photographs he has are probably all doctored. But then Jacob's grandfather dies, is murdered, and his last cryptic message to Jacob sends Jacob on a trip to Wales, to the orphanage that his grandfather spent so much time in his childhood, in search of the people from his grandfather's stories.

The story moves along quickly, but doesn't appear too rushed. It's well-written, and Jacob makes an interesting and amusing narrator. The characters are well-developed for the most part (I especially liked Miss Peregrine, Emma and Millard). The pictures were a delight, making the story all the more interesting with faces to go to the characters names and descriptions. The only fault I could find is that it wasn't long enough! I hope that the author intends to make it a series, as I will definitely buy the sequels if that is the case!

Pleasantly strange. I look forward to reading Hollow City.
