The last 85% was interesting, but the setup had some pacing issues; the romance was a bit flat; side characters should have been developed more. Think it helps knowing that the magical elements are sparse into the end.

Southern gothic has me in a chokehold and this was SO stinking good!!! having MCs that are beautifully complex without being conventionally attractive is TOP TIER

FORMAT: Combo of physical & audio - physical edition had lovely illustrations throughout (not sure if that was a BOTM feature specifically?)

RECAP: Eden, Kentucky, is a dying town known for the legend of E. Starling, a vanished author, and the eerie Starling House she left behind. Locals avoid the place & its last heir, Arthur, but when Opal takes a job there to help her brother, the house begins to feel like home. As dark forces gather, Opal & Arthur must face buried secrets & fight for a future—or let Eden fall to its nightmares.

REVIEW: At one point, this book would've gotten 3.5, maybe 4, stars. But towards the end, the author just lost me. The plot got to a point where it was overcomplicated, IMO. I didn't really understand certain aspects of what was going on, particularly the motivation behind a certain character's actions. There are a lot of people to keep straight, a twisty family history and lore to take in. But I did really like Arthur, and the house is its own interesting character.

Give me more flawed characters, spooky but lovable houses, small town mysteries, sibling bonds, and fantastic romances please. I loved it.

I really loved this book more than I expected to. At times Opal is unbearable, but she’s also so deeply flawed and raw that it works. Arthur quickly became a character I was obsessed with and I loved every scene with him in it.

I also am quickly realizing how much I love books featuring houses that are characters in of themselves. Starling House, in so many ways, reminds me of my own childhood home.

I wish the ending had more of a wrap up. It worked, but there were just a couple things that felt rushed in my opinion. That being said I’d love a novella of Arthur and Opal just living their lives and Jasper coming for holidays.

This is my second book read by the author and I am a fan. The writing is beautiful. There were several moments where I had to stop and really appreciate the style. The plot was interesting but honestly the last 50% of the book could have been shrunk in half.
