Great book for beginner journalists and non-fiction writers. While there is a generous amount of advice within, the focus is on getting published and getting paid. The practical information includes writing prompts as well as a general process by which one can land clips. This book is also great for true newbies because Shapiro includes many successful examples from her and her students. She tells you what to write, who to pitch, and how to get paid.
"It’s magic to see how quickly three pages can change your life."
To anyone who wants to write anything, please buy this book.
Nobody in the lit industry ever wants to tell you how to make money. It's like their noses are so far up their own a**es they believe that we can live off of our words, that the words will magically pay the light bill and buy us groceries. But that is not reality. This book is the tell-all guide on how to actually get published and get paid. Filled with everything from general-isms like “Obsession rids the mind of clutter” to specific instructions like "don’t submit your Valentine’s Day story on February 1," this book is a must-have for anyone who wants to see their work in print.

Good overview of submitting writing for publication with a lot of good advice and examples.
This is a perfect step by step guide on how to craft your own short story. it talks you through how to spot the right topic from what is popular at present and use that topic to draft and then weave the strands of a short story and then work to see you name on the byline of your favourite short story published.
Very practical. I feel equipped to pursue paid writing for today’s publications. Demystifies and educates.
The advice in this was good, but definitely quickly got repetitive and the included articles were sometimes fun to read, but would have benefited from annotations for what the author thought appealed to an editor about the piece. I also felt as if the inclusion of literal links in a physical book was a very strange inclusion. I think that a supplemental website for the paperback edition would have made much more sense than links printed in a book. Overall though, I think this is a good starting point, and I will likely pass this along to a friend with an interest in journalism.
