this is sitting somewhere between 3 and 4 stars for me. i enjoyed the beginning and the concept and i Loved esther and cye sooooo much. i wavered a little bit towards the end about feeling like not much happened but my favorite part of the book was the end- i really loved it and it made it all worth it to me.

god what a delightful morsel - perfect to pull out of a reading slump. sarah gailey is such an interesting world builder, but i wish we had gotten just a few more raw moments between esther and the rest of the cast, especially since it's a journey narrative

This was a fun and quick read; it's hopeful in the face of danger and despair. Maybe not the most detailed dystopian world I've ever read, but the world building was clear and easy to get immersed in.
re-read for book club :) just as good the second time around
Interesting little short story. Would be cool to read more about the world, but the book itself wasn’t my jam.
I liked this, I really did. I found it a quick, but enjoyable read.
But, it suffered for being so short. Esther's journey, and where the story leaves her is fine. But the world the author was trying to build needed more, a lot more because I'm left with a lot of questions about how and why things are this way.
And I think a more detailed story could have allowed Esther's story the breathing room it desperately needed (particularly between losing Beatriz and meeting Cye).
Nonetheless, I would recommend this to others to try.

Really fun & interesting, I just wish it were longer!!! I wanted to get more into the characters and what they were doing/feeling. But maybe not rly fair of me to have that as a “critique” ?? it can’t help that it’s short... but we simply need more gay shit!!!
