Engaging, but some elements are off.

Lissa is a nurse in London. After she witnesses a violent and tragic crime she begins to suffer from PTSD. Her boss arranges for her to spend a few months in a small town with a lighter workload hoping that it will help her heal. Lissa switches with Cormac, an army veteran and his small town's nurse who hasn't really spent more than 1 day in a big city and enjoys small-town life. Although they have never met face-to-face, Lissa and Cormac begin to connect while communicating about everything and anything, including patients, life and love. This brings a newfound love for the profession they have chosen as well as each other. What happens when they meet face-to-face?

I loved the idea of these two walking the other through their patients and daily lives while falling for each other without ever meeting. It intrigued me. Plus, I had read the previous 2 books in the series and enjoyed them to want to read more in that world.

For the most part, the book gave me exactly what I expected and was enjoyable overall. I loved reading about Lissa and Cormac trying to adjust to the daily life in an unfamiliar place and dealing with a different type of patient they were previously used to.

Lissa seemed real to me in how she reacted and her general trauma at the events she witnessed. It felt realistic to believe that she would have a meltdown, even with her background and experiences. Cormac's reaction to how different London was to his small-town in Scotland seemed realistic as well. Although I don't live in a town quite as small as Cormac's, I still feel out of place when I travel into a major city in the area so I could relate to him feeling out of place there.

My biggest issue is that romance element. I kept waiting for it to start and it was like there were tiny nuggets of it but then all of a sudden Lissa says she has a crush on Cormac and it's like...how did that happen? It was way too fast. It almost would have benefitted the book more to have them be good friends in the end instead of indicating the start of a relationship. It just didn't work for me. Combine that with some smaller issues here and there and I found that this was not a 5 star book for me.

Overall, I enjoyed the book and would read more about this small town in Scotland. I would also re-read this book again for sure.

The beginning of the novel was beautiful in the way it talked about trauma and healing. I realized when I only had an hour of the book left that the characters still had never met or really talked about anything. They had both developed a slight crush on each other. The ending is wild and chaotic and then just ends and we’re supposed to believe that they’re in love. I just wanted more out of the book.

So incredibly surprised by this book (and author). Was not at all what I expected, but in the best way. Such mature and emotional writing, loved the characters and the setting. She writes so visually, both with her characters and settings. Started a long obsession with her books I fear.
Why does the cover give so YA I fully thought this was a YA rom-com 😭
