well i have been going back and forth on reading this book for awhile, and seeing as Greg B narrates it that was a really big deciding factor. the thing that took me away from wanting to read it was the lack of romance that was going to happen.. i heard this was sllllllooooooooowwwwwww burn haha and it is, no kissing or anything, just the start of attraction starting in this book.

Matt (Hugh) is a human who accidentally..kinda.. stumbled on the supe world (getting photographic evidence..whoops haha) and is now working for a Quest investigation a supe investigation firm haha. Lochlan is a selkie who needs help finding out who is harassing him, and Hugh is put on the job haha.

This does have a lot of the characters from EJ Russels Mythmatched world, but you don't have to read those to enjoy this book.. i mean it might be smart to read [b:Single White Incubus|41729282|Single White Incubus (Supernatural Selection, #1)|E.J. Russell|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1536279043l/41729282._SY75_.jpg|65103991], since Ted is brought up ever chapter at least 5 times haha, but you really don't need to. and almost all of the super natural characters that EJ Russel has created are going to pop up in this book for a cameo.

I am going to continue on with the series, i like all these characters and Greg B doing a Scottish accent for Lochlan...um yes please!

This is a mystery but is also about finding one's place.
Matt is a human who accidentally discovers the supernatural world. He used to be a photographer selling photos to a tabloid and have always wanted fairies and other supernaturals to be real. When he realises that the guy he has been crushing on for a while is actually a shifter, his worldview takes a complete turn.
Except the supernaturals have their own rules about humans, and usually they involve memory modification and being kicked out. Matt somehow, proves an exception and is allowed inside the world of the supes on probationary basis. He has to agree to all sorts of things, and his camera has enchanted lenses to prevent him from selling any pictures he takes in the human world. He's also employed by Quest Investigations, the only investigative agency for the supes who doesn't have any police or other investigative avenues.
Matt is called Hugh by the supes because he used to be called human like a slur till his boss came up with the creative idea of calling him Hugh Mann, so now he's Hugh in the world of the supes. Matt still carries a torch for Ted, his grizzly shifter crush who's happily married. But all of that changes when he crosses paths with Lachlan Brodie, a selkie who's being harassed by his ex-husband.
What looks like a simple case of domestic dispute turns out to be anything but, and Matt who is put in charge of the case, has to fight between his own inappropriate feelings for his client and the seeming pack of lies Lachlan has told.
This was my first book in this universe, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I had a feeling that reading some of the earlier books would give more of a background on everything that's happened in the past, but even without it, this is quite an enjoyable read. Matt's enthusiasm for the supes and his realisation that they aren't necessarily better than humans are both so believable and relatable. Matt's struggle with fitting in a world that clearly doesn't want him, and his self-esteem issues in Quest where he feels like he's a useless addition are all brought out very convincingly.
The world building in this is beautifully done. There's nothing on the nose, but it's a fully realised world of supes with their own rules and hierarchy.
If you love paranormal mysteries, queernormative societies, slow burn romance, a relatable protagonist and magic, this is the book for you!

I enjoyed the book, the narration was just as wonderful as everything Greg Boudreaux does and I think I'm looking forward to the next one.

some notes, I know you can read and enjoy this series without anything else, I did it that way, and Matt does explain somewhat who everyone else but it's more in a way of letting you remember over actually telling you anything, so if you need to know more or the whole deal about the world, then I'd suggest you read the Mythmatched Paranormal series first

Also this has big romance feels, though it is also a subplot but more so like it's a series developed romance over, so slow burn over multiple books romance and I could see other books in the series not having any real direct focus on said romance (though I don't know I've not looking) it's why I liked it so much as I need very heavy suggested romance for a mystery to grab my attention. mainly there is eyeing and hoping and somewhat pinning.

I am so glad for another book in this world! Matt was always interesting and real. There was humour, action, and mystery. It was a fun read and I look forward to more and seeing the romance grow.

Greg Boudreaux's narration really sold me on this slightly wacky and over the top paranormal world. I legit laughed out loud more than once, and am anticipating the future books on audio!

This was an interesting start to a magical mystery series with a tiny sprinkling of a romance subplot. I am not the biggest fan of when the MC is kind of talking to the reader, which this has a little bit of. It wasn't too distracting for me though, and mainly was in the beginning of the book.

The mystery was interesting, and I like the setup of a human working in a magical investigation business, sounds like a good series set up where every case has the potential to be something really unique. Also, love anything having to do with Selkies!

Greg Boudreaux has a great narration, per usual, in this. I really enjoy how there was some voice acting included, as well as reading with different voices. Boudreaux added some extra depth to the story with strategically placed pauses, sounding like a character was eating with their mouth full, sarcasm, etc. I really enjoy the additional performance to narrations, and this added to the story for me! Brought it to life.

I received an arc of this audiobook from GRR in exchange for an honest review. All views are my own.

E J Russell was a new to me author before this book, but this certainly won’t be the last time I read their work. In fact, I have already bought the next book in the series - this was really that good! Lower spice than I normally go for, but the story and characters drew me in so completely that I absolutely demolished it. I listened to this, so worth noting also that Greg Boudreaux absolutely smashed the narration of the story! Well worth a read / listen!
