this novel is one that really had to grow on me over time, but the more i sat with it after finishing, the more i came to appreciate and fall in love with its themes and messages. i think both victor frankenstein and his creature are incredibly well-written and complex characters, though i’ll always hold some resentment toward frankenstein himself, i’m not gonna lie…

beyond the pursuit of knowledge or the desire to understand existence, frankenstein wanted something greater: to rise above human limitations, as a way of rejecting ordinary life. in that sense, knowledge became a tool to feed his pride. but can you truly transcend humanity without losing a part of your own humanity in the process? in the end, his downfall and isolation are consequences of his own making.

the creature is an example of how cruelty can arise from the absence of proper nurturing, connection, and belonging. he’s shaped by neglect, rejection, and a hostile environment, which raises the question of how much of a person’s nature is truly their own, and how much is shaped by the way they’re treated by the world.
