cannot believe i've waited this long to read this—truly an excellent book and i was consistently on the edge of my seat listening.
people definitely downplay the romance aspect...i think it's fair to say julia in 1984 is one of the first manic pixie dream girls.

This is a brilliant science fiction in an entire totalitarian society novel.
Truthfully isn't for the lighthearted because of themes of torture and brainwashing. You wouldn't even stand Newspeak, Thoughtcrime, Doublethink, or how crazy powerful was the Thought Police. You will hate the characters but you will also love how brilliant Orwell's brain is to create a futuristic imagery that's unfortunately happening now.
Wow.

So after a month of processing, I feel like I can finally write this review.
George Orwell is a good author, and I did not hate my time reading this; however, he is kind of deranged if he thought it was okay to explicitly describe some of the things in this book. I do like the message, and thought that Julia was one of the best women written by a man.
To summarize, Orwell knows how to write women, but his brain is a scary place.
