Mīļo pasaulīt, beidzot varēšu aizmigt. Man nevajadzētu lasīt šādas grāmatas.

I hovered between 3-4 stars on this one. The broader context around this book being published made me less excited to read it from the start, and the nearly 1000 pages even less so. But, JKR’s writing is so natural and easy to read I got into the story after a couple hundred pages. I still feel like there were just way too many plotlines that could’ve been edited down and a lot of threads left unresolved. However, the story was interesting, and I was surprised by the ending but could see the way clues were subtly dropped throughout. Now I’m sure we will have to wait ages for the next one...

Is it bad? Not really
Did it need 950 pages (or 32 hours in my case) to be told? No.

I don't think this series is ever praised for it's very clever and engaging mysteries -they're fine, but not why I read it. The Strike/Robin dynamic is why I read it, and for a near 1000 pages, there wasn't enough progress. You'd think book 4 would've been enough for the buildup, but no, they still need more. I don't think even the next book would contain relationship progress.

Mystery-wise, I didn't think it was the series' best. I also didn't really sense the year passing, which I thought would be cool to sense. I didn't really care all that much, which is why the book took forever to be read.

This was good for a road trip since it's such a long book.

I ended up enjoying it - the plot is quite intricate though so you may need to take notes on the characters.

Not as good as the other 4 - perhaps a little too meandering but I was fooled again, having no idea who the killer was - it was also really nice to spend so much time with the main characters.

I don’t want to give jk 5 stars, so 4.5. This book was long, but I was totally sucked in. Lots of interesting points about gender and emotional work.

Brilliantly interwoven story. I loved it, all the way through.

“If you look carefully, you might just see an asteroid passing through the house of bollocks.”

Honestly, I can’t think of another author who could write a 900+ page book, and when I got to the end, I wished for more. It isn’t even that the mystery itself was so amazing (although It was good! And I’m glad many of the red herring possibilities proved to be just that—she knows the kids of villains we want and which ones we would be bored by), it’s that she knows how to pace her stories—from beginning to end, but more importantly, from chapter to chapter, that she can create worlds worth living in for a while, and characters who feel flawed but lovable…and she also does petty tyranny really, really well.
Umbridge was maybe the best villain in the Harry Potter universe—sure, Voldemort is evil, but she makes you want to scream in impotent rage at her injustices…and this book has plenty of moments that felt akin to that. Also (and I’m 100% staying away from the TERF discourse here), Rowling does convey the casual (and not so casual) sexism of a male-dominated workforce in a way that feels true and well done. The point unmissable, but doesn’t feel overly soapbox-y.
Point is, I like Strike and I like Robin and I like Rowling’s ability to craft a narrative, and I’m looking forward to the next (will there be a next??).
