Y’all this book has everything! Fake dating! Enemies to lovers! Solid female friendships! Feminism! Prank wars! Funny banter! This May End Badly was such a fun book to read, and a reminder of why I love YA literature SO much.
When Doe finds out that her all-girls boarding school is merging with the all-boys school across the street, she’s devastated. Not only has her school been her safe haven the last few years, but the two schools have a massive rivalry — and she’s right in the middle of that rivalry with the golden boy of the boys school behind her No. 1 enemy. So Doe comes up with a plan to kill two birds with one stone — she makes a pact with Nathaniel, her No. 1 enemy’s cousin, to pretend to date. She gets under her rival’s skin, together they can figure out a way to prevent the two schools from merging, and Nathaniel has a project he needs Doe’s help on. But as lines begin to blur and reasons for the merger are revealed, and a bigger problem arises at the school threatening the girls, Doe is stuck between choosing to be the person she is and the person she wants to be. This May End Badly is a beautiful book about friendship, feminism, your first love, and doing the right thing — even when it hurts.
One of my favourite parts of this book was getting to see the friendship between Doe and her friend group. Female friendship is such a pivotal and complex thing, and Markum wrote this friend group beautifully. They were all unique but complemented one another, and Doe’s growth around her friend group was so great to see. They were such a fun group of girls, and their friendship was a beautiful thread woven into the story.
Doe and Nate! Y’all know I love a good enemies to lovers and fake dating trope and this book served! I loved watching their relationship develop, and they were just so cute together.

Man, took me for a ride in this girl v boys boarding school rivalry. If you’re wondering why it’s so long, it’s because it brought up so many important themes: divorce, anger management, friendship, sexual harassment, honesty, sexual orientation, gender diversity and inclusivity, family support, etc. Mc struggled a lot, but grew a lot.

I expected This May End Badly to be a lighthearted, enemies to lovers young adult novel about rival schools, but it actually dealt with some pretty heavy topics. I was pleasantly surprised.
I thoroughly enjoyed the story and I wasn't even disappointed when Doe's "enemy" did not turn out to be the love interest, because I loved Wells.
