I think as a book for children, it's definitely recommended. I remember reading it as a kid, and despite the fact it took me about 3 tries to actually get into it I enjoyed it immensely. In some aspects I think it can be considered as an 'escape', considering that a world like this is so incredibly different and, well, magical compared to the word we are living in right now.

I think trying to get into it as an adult, however, is a fairly harder task since the writing style that JK Rowling uses can be viewed as a fairly 'childish' perspective. I can agree with this argument as the phrasing she uses isn't necessarily vibrant or potent to the reader. However, it's all a matter of person choice - in my opinion, I enjoyed this novel quite a bit, and while there were a few flaws I think it was a good read. A great recommendation for children.
