For my money basically the only book Rowling ever wrote worth a damn. Her worst authorial instincts (embarrassingly overwriting every sentence, inane world building at the expense of any pacing, racism) are kept in check in favour of low-scale fantasy wonder. I'm not all in, I really just don't love her style, but this is short and light footed and leaves plenty of room for the imagination to fill in the gaps (something that would be very quickly lost to the cold unfeeling grasp of world-building). I don't really mourn this series' descent into self indulgent monotony, but Rowling the writer would have been far better served if these books had not gotten so big that her editors became reluctant to tell her no. Not that I particularly care how well life serves J K Rowling. Still, a cute read.

This is took me back to my childhood. I can visualize 8 year old me reading this book and having a great time. I couldn't keep the smile off my face as I was reading this book. It still ranks high for me. I am still a Potterhead. I love the story and it's very relatable. I know this author has her misgivings but the books are top tier for me.
