Riveting but not an enjoyable story really. I am ambivalent about seeing the movie version even though the film has been done by a lot of talented people.

Can’t say this was an enjoyable read because of the narrator’s destructive impulses, but it was a fascinating look at the loss of selfhood many experience as mothers.
Sad. I left it feeling hopeless for the main character, whose self discovery is self destructive.

I could write a book about this book. I rented it from the library but ordered my own copy as I was reading because I felt that to have a highlighted copy would be akin to having my own journal of this period of my life. Why do I keep accidentally reading books about mothers that abandon their children? I have never read anything that so successfully reproduces the emotional intensity of living with a three-year-old. One page in particular, near the end, struck me, explained myself to me, made me cry at the McDonald’s play place—but to quote any part of it in this review would I think disservice it because it would feel too trite, too much of a consolation/inspiration to overwhelmed mothers; the page has power to console only because of all the fury and exasperation that has come before it. In reading these 140 pages I feel I have lived a whole life. Am I being too effusive? 7/5
