dark emotional reflective slow-paced

Elena Ferrante captures womanhood in such a vivid and intense way, her writing and metaphors peirce into your skin and leaves you thinking about them for a long. I love that none of her characters are bound by morals, they do questionable things, are sometimes even nasty, but never does it take away from their experiences and struggles. The impressive thing about this book was that nothing really happens. All of it internal, and through one small action Elena Ferrante captures what it has meant for women to be mothers, all ugly parts included. I especially love the way she speaks of Naples, as a past Leda can never escape despite doing everything to try to. It seems that these women are always trying to escape, their situation, but also themselves and the confinement places on them by simply being women. In a way their children are their captors, pulling them back in. That doesn't take away from the fact that they love their children, in fact that love it what keeps them imprisoned. And yet, with all this, it never seems like Elena Ferrante is trying to make some bold claim or argument. She's simply and honestly telling the story of her characters.

I think you probably have to be a mother to fully understand this book and if I was maybe I would have given it 4 stars

Great book. I watched the movie first, and I think having read this makes a rewatch totally worthwhile.

3.5/5

very fresh look on motherhood and the suffocation and lack of freedom that comes with having children. giving the point of view of an imperfect mother with imperfect children, an imperfect family and an imperfect life. such a raw depiction of what it is to be a woman in a world that takes the actions and responsibilities of women for granted. elena ferrante never disappoints, and her writing style remains unmatched. but having already read the neapolitan series you can see many of the themes dealt being repeated. i would have loved to see her take on different challenges for her work. still insanely good, though.

Definitely not ass tight and cohesive as her other novels but this is still a great example of how impressive Ferrante is. Her main character in this novel feels vastly different from the others I have read and she still captures such vivid relationships in only 140 pages
