Didn't like it all that much until we talked about it in class and unlocked its populism, critique of commercialism, superimposing of the US map, etc etc. Now I'm willing to read the whole series.
“You have plenty of courage, I am sure," answered Oz. "All you need is confidence in yourself. There is no living thing that is not afraid when it faces danger. The true courage is in facing danger when you are afraid, and that kind of courage you have in plenty.”

★★★★
EDIT - this has definitely been growing on me the longer i think about it, so i've upped my rating!

this was... fine??? I think I would have enjoyed it a lot more if I read it as a kid, but alas, for 26 year old me, it's just alright!
trigger warnings: cyclone, animal deaths (not that traumatic), a giant ass spider.

As a wee lad, I had read all the Oz books, save for the first and the last. It is a marvelous world indeed fraught with peril and a surprising amount of violence (I recall at least one beheading and the story of the Tin Man's origin story is pure body horror mixed with pathos). It is not so much a children's tale now as it is a children's tale that functions as point of departure for an anthropological meditation on how notions of what is appropriate for children and how we conceive of children has changed.
Also, I do wish that one pervasive and pernicious political reading of the book would go away or at least be discussed as a case study of how certain allegorical interpretations can have long afterlives, in spite of solid historical merits.

I had only ever seen the movie before reading this, which I didn't much care for. The book, however, is a delightful children's story full of good lessons and excellent imagination. I highly recommend reading this to your kids before having them see the movie if it's at all possible!
Mungkin hampir semua orang pernah mendengar soal Oz, Dorothy, dan The Yellow Brick Road, tapi berapa yang benar-benar pernah membaca buku ini? Saya belum pernah baca, padahal punya [b:Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West|37442|Wicked The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West (Wicked Years, #1)|Gregory Maguire|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1302168062s/37442.jpg|1479280], side-story tak resmi dari Oz.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and found it to be a real page turner I could not put down. It was vastly different to the film (which I do love) but I appreciated this difference. The journeys of the characters in the story version contain a greater level of insight and learning. The crazy imagination of Baum in writing this story is wonderful. Every child should have the opportunity to read or be read this classic story.
