Classic/Children's Lit: I had never read this classic, and it was a quick, easy, and fun read. I read Wicked in the past year or so, and I especially loved seeing all of the connections between the two novels that I had not previously realized. I loved Wicked, but having only seen the movie adaptation of The Wizard of Oz, I now realize that I missed out on a lot of connections that were based on the book itself.

A nice juvenile fantasy, although I found it hard to not constantly compare it to the movie. I liked how it’s clearer that the Scarecrow, Tin Woodman, and Lion all have what they desire from the start, and Dorothy has some more spunk here as well. Also interesting to compare this to some of the other juvenile fiction (e.g. White Fang and The Jungle Book) I’ve read recently; the others make a clear separation between the might and right of the intelligent animals at the top of the food chain (and even Charlotte’s Web defends a spider’s prerogative to eat insects) while this novel tends to favor the prey over the predators. In any case, Baum definitely had a creative mind!

Really enjoyed the reading experience of this book as someone who loves the movie but hasn’t seen it in a while.

I have always loved the movie since it was a part of my childhood but I never got around to reading the book. Recently, I finished listening to the audiobook version of it. The story was very different from the iconic movie and it felt more complete and sensible. Unlike the movie, the story did not feel rushed.

That is the case for most book adaptations but each version is beautiful in this case.
