Wow this was low-key almost a 5-star book for me. I don't really know what to put my finger on for why, but it was just all-around so wonderful! I really liked the writing style and the way the story was told. I liked the plot (I had seen the movie so I remembered some of it ahead of time). I feel like Ponyboy's narration really encapsulates the idea that you'll do anything for the people you're close to, but you don't really know WHY you're doing it all the time. I think this story also explores guilt in a way that is really good for teenagers, even if they aren't going around with knives and guns in their pockets. (Also, we love young Patrick Swayze as Darry.)
There were a few outdated references that would probably be considered offensive today, but I think that can still invite conversation for younger readers just as much as any other theme in the book (as long as it is not glazed over as being "okay").
