Having read everything else in the Rivers of London series, I decided to try this as a random sample of the series in comic format. These are sometimes described as ‘graphic novels’, although they’re much shorter than novels, and might be more accurately described as illustrated short stories.

I’m not a big reader of comics, but I have read some in the past, and I find that I can cope with Rivers of London in comic format. The illustrations of the characters are mostly tolerable, although some are better than others. Molly is a difficult one to draw; I’m not sure exactly what she should look like, but I don’t think the attempt here is a success.

My main criticism is of the story itself, which strikes me as different in kind and below the usual standard of stories in this series. It reminds me vaguely of the old Avengers TV series from the 1960s (which I’m old enough to remember), but without the light-heartedness that was the main attraction of that series.

Of course it would be difficult to cram a good story into this abbreviated format; but stories of any length can be made to work if you have the knack of it. This story seems to me too formulaic, it’s story-writing by numbers, it lacks inspiration. The villain and his dastardly plot are corny.

I wouldn’t say this was a particularly bad experience, but I don’t feel encouraged to read more of these comics.

Graphic novel edition of a Peter Grant short story is a good little taster but I prefer the full novels. Art work is good though

Rivers of London: Cry Fox is the fifth collected volume of the Rivers of London comic book. This volume carries on the trend of consisting of four collected issues of the comic book.

Following on from the story in Night Witch vengeful Russian mobsters are looking to hire members of London's demi-monde (the umofficial society consisting of minor magic users and supernatural creatures) to bring bloody retribution down on the witch Varvara Sidorovna Tamonina. However, the ex-Soviet sorcerer is under the protective wing of London's own wizarding cop, DC Peter Grant, and to get the attention of Grant and his colleagues, the the daughter of a prominent Russian oligarch is kidnapped by parties unknown but possibly fox-like. What makes it worse is that Peter is going to have to leave his beloved London and go out into the countryside.

Cry Fox features one of slimiest gits to ever grace the page, Reynard Fossman, as the main antagonist. What with his sociopathic tendencies and serious paedo vibes I just can't abide this character... but then again I'm not supposed to. I was expecting Abigail to be a little more present in the story, possibly even the protagonist, after all the hints in the main novel series but alas she was somewhat relegated to a secondary character. I did like the not very well hidden twist but it was so obviously flagged as to be none existent as a twist.

Again with these graphic novels it adds to the mythos without being essential reading. Do you need to read it? No, as I've said it's not essential. Should you read it if you like RoL? Bloody right you should.

I’m always up for more Abigail! Love her being smart and also intrigued that Guleed got caught up in it. Limited Peter, but still a great and enjoyable story.
