I freely admit that the world and escapades of Charlie Parker and Co is my favourite book series.

I've been an avid fan since I first picked up "Dark Hollow" .....and before anyone says anything, Yes! I know that this book was episode 2 of the series. At the time, 14 year old me was not aware of Every Dead Thing. All I was concerned about was making the most of the book tokens I had been given. Since then, I've gone back and read everything on multiple occasions.
I am currently working through the audiobook versions of each book in the series.

The Killing Kind was fantastically....
read/voiced/acted/performef (not sure of the correct verb). Jeff Harding has perfectly captured the sound I had in my head for Charlie's voice. He does a fantastic Louis and a not-too-bad female voice for Rachel. The only thing that didn't line up for me was the voice chosen for Angel... perhaps just a little too nasal in my opinion.

A great story line, fantastically creepy bad guys, loads of action, a good mystery and the mildest hint of the supernatural. Another great piece of work by John Connolly.

I almost rated this lower, but I enjoyed the writing, the characters, and most of the story, so I think probably 3 1/2 stars is closer to what I think. Speaking of characters, this has one strange, very evil character known as Mr Pudd, whose hobby seems to be spiders and killing people, often with spiders. And if that's not bad enough, he works for someone who may be even worse. And to be truly evil like that, they have to be part of a crazy religious group that makes Jim Jones look like an angel.

Charlie is hired to investigate the death of a young woman who was interested in this group. He was hired by a rich politician to find out whether she killed herself or was murdered. He thought it couldn't hurt to find out more - boy was he wrong. Charlie didn't want to do it at first. He didn't think the money was that important, but then he realized that if you always work for charity, then pretty soon, charity will be working for you, so he took the job.

Somehow, everything begins to tie together, including his previous case with the traveling man. But I thought there were too many supernatural elements in the story, and they didn't really fit in for me. The story is mainly a gritty crime story, and the supernatural takes away from that and makes it into a semi horror story, which it isn't. So, although I like the writing and the characters, I don't know if I want to continue reading the series unless another one comes my way and I have nothing better to read.

Do NOT read this book if you're afraid of spiders. Or be ready to skip page after page like I did because nope nope NOPE.

Crawlers aside, it's another solid Charlie Parker story. I really like how the supernatural is gradually becoming more present. I'm looking forward to the next volume !
