Made me want some fruit.
This is the first time in a while I've chosen a book based on its illustrations, but the poet's brother (who illustrated this volume) is included in a Pre-Raphaelite art show near me. The poems themselves are not really my cup of tea, too melodramatic and religious, but do include some lovely imagery.
We read and analyzed this in class and, unlike the case of most school readings, it thoroughly enriched my enjoyment of this poem. There are so many theories of what it's true meaning could be, but it's undoubtedly incredibly well written. The symbolism is so rich and the imagery is so stunning and, wow, this is a great poem.

This particular copy of “Goblin Market” is breathtakingly beautiful! The illustrations along with the poem make for a whimsical experience. It reads a lot like a fairytale and I can see why is does occasionally get past as a children’s story.
“For there is no friend like a sister
In calm or stormy weather;
To cheer one on the tedious way,
To fetch one of one goes astray,
To lift one if one totters down,
To strengthen whilst one stands.”
What the characters take away from their misadventure is to pass on the importance of family and caring for each other to their children. Yes there is a lot of other things going on in this poem (you can read other reviews for those), but this is what I wish to take away.

A simple tale in the end, but a good one about sisterly devotion and the dangers of temptation (plus, goblins that are actually evil creatures and not pretty boys waiting to love the right clumsy, plain girl).
