I say this on every review of Anne Carson's work, but she is such an astounding writer and translator.
One of the biggest crimes of translated works is that it is so extremely hard to find works that are more than word to word translations. Sometimes you'll get lucky and find a translation that matches the poetry style and rhyme scheme while staying as close to word to word translation as possible, but I have never seen anything like this before and never have again. Carson translates on a vibe-to-vibe basis while also selecting which stories she believes best encapsulates the myth. Which is how an Oresteia happened.
An Oresteia is a collection of 3 different poets telling 3 different parts of the same story, and Carson's translation is astounding.
"Filth begets Filth" will live with me till I die.

Probably my favourite translation of the three dramas.
i've always been fascinated by greek myth, like any percy jackson kid, but i was always scared of the classics. i found a quote of this book online, and i loved how carson blended myth with more modern language. it makes the story a lot more accessible, and it helps drive home the point that myth was created by humans for other humans, even if language gets in the way.
the modern language but classic setting really are fascinating. i felt like these characters were real, not just Iconic Greek Characters.
also the "it's rotten work" "not if it's you" quote is in this book and it fuckin jumpscared me
