Anne Carson translations can be so personal!!!!

Plyades + Orestes “I’ll take care of you / It’s rotten work / Not to me. Not if it’s you” exchange, YOU WILL ALWAYS BE FAMOUS <333

Moreover, putting these three plays together works really well chronologically and I loved seeing the playwrights different tones side by side. Great discussions about grief, justice, and cyclical violence!

Aischylos is a challenging read. Sophokles, a darling of mine, convinced me with Elektra, and Euripides blew me away with Orestes. Having forced my way through three of Euripides' other works, I was surprised it became my highlight. Anne Carson's commentaries opened Greek tragedies to me once more, and though it'll take me time to sink my teeth into the Oresteia, I loved the time I spent with it.

"Not to me, not if it's you," hits different in context, huh.

Anne Carson is a brilliant translator, and her introductions are indispensable for how she understands and finds herself mystified by the characters. The women of "An Oresteia" are elevated, sympathetic as they are destructive, keeping Carson's voice as she wrangles the styles of three different playwrights to tell a story that is as wonderfully modern as it is lovingly Greek.
