I, like so many before me, bought this just so I could read “It’s rotten work/Not to me. Not if it’s you” (crying, throwing up, transcending human existence).
However, the entirety of Anne Carson’s translation of these texts is incredible and I was captivated throughout. It’s dramatic, hysterical, and beautiful. I love the classics but this particular translation defies all others (in my personal opinion).

awesome. the first two plays are excellent, and then the euripedes just gets bonkers, which is kind of amazing to watch. now if carson could just spend the next 25 years or so translating the greeks, i could get myself to read them all. and be very happy about it. (yes, i realize that perhaps it is not the most strictly word-for-word correct translation of these plays, but you know what? now i've read them and enjoyed them and understand what the hell just happened. the story was conveyed expertly. for my money (esp. because it's not poetry) that's what i want--to be excited about it.)
My favorite book was definitely Orestes because it was like a comedic tragedy

I found this much easier to read than the fagles translation. As always I highly recommend carson for a modern and poetical translation of the ancient tragedians and playwrights.
I will follow Anne Carson to the ends of the earth. If any ancient Greek mortal deserved to become a Goddess, Elektra would be one for her feminine-powered audacity!
