I loved this book. An emotional journey, powerfully written. Multiple narrators and time frames worked very well.

Agree with previous review that there are some parallels with modern readers to descriptions of the flu epidemic.

I would say to pay attention to content warnings - this can be a difficult read at times, and I imagine could be quite traumatic for some readers, especially the chapters from the perspective of the antagonist.

I thought the language (and translation) was beautiful, and the history was interesting to me, but the book itself was also annoying. There are only three categories of people in this book's world: benevolent put-upon landowners, childlike peons who are so grateful for the landowner's kindness, and evil ungrateful peons who are greedy and hurt people for no reason. Annoying.

I HAVE FEELINGS!

This is a lovely book. It's a very family-oriented novel similar-ish to Pachinko, but with a little extra magic that still feels like real life. It's a story about family and trust and home and love and be[e]ing connected with Mother Earth.

Before you pick it up, I do want to note that part of this historical fiction novel does take place during the 1928 Spanish flu pandemic, so that might be difficult to read about for you... or it could help your current experience feel even more validated. It felt like the latter to me — there were moments that I definitely needed to pause and take a deep breath for, but I'm so glad I read it. I'll put a few more CWs below too, but all in all a lovely heart-squeezing read.
