Cute, but not fantastic. I remember liking it a lot back when I was obsessed with everything written by Margaret Peterson Haddix, but I think it's meant for that time of a girl's life (13-15 years old). Glad I re-read it, though.

I really love this book, and I read it over and over when I was younger. It's a little grittier than most young adult Cinderella retellings, and much more satisfying in the way it ends. I think I prefer the original cover to this shiny new one with a red lipped model in a tiara. It feels too modern to fit the story.

Cute little Cinderella spin off! A little underdeveloped toward the end but creative and empowering!

Growing up, Cinderella was one of my all time favorite tales (still is) despite the message the story conveys that women need to be saved by men., etc. It was amazing to read the story from another angle. A woman who is strong, independent, intelligent, persistent, determined. A woman who takes control of her own life and writes her own fate.

Besides loving Ella, I adored Mary and Jed and I loved the friendship between them all. It was a joy to meet these wonderful characters, and go on an adventurous journey with them.

I can relate to Ella in so many ways, like questioning everything and refusing to follow tradition blindly even though I am living in a conservative household.

A new favorite for sure!

I like how the story flows. I think what this book says about love, beauty, happiness, independence and destiny. I like how it teaches children to take control of their own destiny. gender roles is questioned. I think that's great.
a bit weird that there are words like 'automaton' but it's a fantasy and I shouldn't over think a word that appears once. probably.

Some have said this book showed a strong, independent woman. While I agree that Ella was very strong both physically and emotionally, I disagree about the independent part. She made her own decisions, yes, but she always had help along the way, and she accepted that help. That's what I loved about this story. It wasn't just another book about how a young woman can do anything men can do, on her own. It proved that being able to ask for help when you need it is strength.

Clean scale: 4.5/5
-Language: Non aplicable.
-Sex: Details of a passionate kiss. Thoughts of "intimacy." A man that was sentenced to death for rape is placed as a young girl's jailer to scare her into giving in. He makes remarks towards her such as "wanting" her and talks about getting more women because he's "strong."
-Substance use: Non aplicable.
-Violence: Mild fighting where a young girl ends up tied around the wrists and ankles. One man thrusts a sword through another man's chest. Speak of war. Small details of medical work such as setting broken arms, looking for diseases, etc.
