Not an easy start - felt too typical and the characters normal, expected a boring book - but glad I stayed with it to see the sisters lives unfold. A generous reminder of all we experience, not just the here and now, and how our choices create our reality.
I've been reading Jennifer Weiner for years. She's one of my go-to's for semi-serious but still fun "women's literature." (I hate that designation, for the record)
This latest book from her is next-level stuff. This is an absolutely fantastic novel that my only complaints about are 1. it ended and 2. I didn't write it.
The book tells the story of two sisters growing up in Detroit in the 50s and 60s and follows them throughout their lives. It is unabashedly feminist and smart and I kind of want to start reading it again right now, even though I just finished it an hour ago.
This is a buy-in-hardcover, re-read annually kind of book that I can't wait to run out and get a copy of when it comes out on June 11.
Disclosure: I was given an advance copy of this book by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

A generational book about a Jewish family in Metro Detroit? I'm in.
I always love reading about my area and imagining the lives that the characters are living are concurrent with my family. I see a lot of them in this book.

In the same fantastic Jennifer Weiner style, this book drew me in with the characters and never ending plot developments. It stretched over many years and kept me loving it throughout the entire story. I wished it hadn't ended. Sigh.
Though an interesting story, I felt like it was one tragedy after another. It was not what I was expecting. Great writing, just a bit too depressing for me
This book was definitely a slow burn but towards the middle I was really drawn in to see how it ended. I saw a lot of reviews saying that they wanted a happy ending and there wasn't one but I disagree. This book really resonated with me about finding yourself and being brave enough to be that. I found it incredibly sad to think about what women have had to fight for and that we are still fighting but also empowering knowing what women before me have given me.
If you can get through the first half of this book I think it's worth it!

Meaty and great novel about the relationship between two sisters, spanning decades.
I liked it a lot. One thing bugged me, how much she talked about weight and diets, but maybe other women think about that more than has ever occurred to me?

so this probably won't win any literary awards but the story really touched me on a personal level: as a daughter, wife, mother, sister. Really really really enjoyed
4.75 - so many good lessons, you just have to be open to hear them. And Noni!! Ugh.
