I LOVED THIS WITH ALL MY SOUL. Loved the plot twist, loved the drama between characters, the beef, the hard traumas, the hard scenes of it, the tension, the mystery, the suspense, Everything (I love opened endings when your questions are all answered, you just stand looking at the book like this: 😦)
This book was decent enough, but I didn’t manage to connect with mc, and in the end it turned out to be just ok. Which is a little disappointing, because the blurb sounded so good.

Police officer Sergeant Chandler Jenkins is manning the rural station in Wilbrook, Western Australia on edge of hundreds of miles of unexplored wilderness. It's the usual kind of day until a dishevelled & injured man stumbles into the station. He says his name is Gabriel & he was abducted whilst hitch-hiking by a man named Heath. Heath had driven Gabriel to a remote cabin & restrained him in chains before telling Gabriel that he was to be victim no. 55, but Gabriel managed to escape.
Chandler has never dealt with a potentially big case like this before & has to call in the higher-ups, including Mitch, the man who used to be his partner whilst training who has now made the rank of Inspector. Chandler is making sure he has all his bases covered when a second man appears. Also dishevelled & injured, he says his name is Heath & he was abducted by a serial killer named Gabriel.....
The synopsis to this was immediately intriguing to me & the premise is really good. Unfortunately the execution of it was not so good - the story became bogged down around Chandler & Mitch's antagonistic working relationship. There seemed to be no real reason as to why Mitch was so nasty to Chandler & it just made him seem like an ass. Also police procedure seemed to go out the window & one of the suspects escapes police custody TWICE! The worst thing though was the ending - what the heck was that?
My thanks to NetGalley & publishers, Simon & Schuster UK, for the opportunity to read an ARC. I am voluntarily giving an honest review.

I received an ARC of this book.
Two men appear in a small West Australian town with the exact same story. He kidnapped me. He tried to kill me. I escaped. I need to be safe. Which one do you believe? Are they both killers or are they both victims? This is what Chandler and his team must learn.
Throw in a best friend whom you haven’t spoken to in years who is now your superior and you have a crazy story with heart and a mystery worry solving.
What does 55 mean? He told said I would be 55. The police need to solve this in order to work out the truth.
Chandler is trying to be the best dad he can for his kids and the best Sergeant for his town when this ‘serial killer’ falls into his lap. Suddenly, he is unsure who is telling the truth and who is safe. He is determined to get to the bottom of it so his town can go back to normal and his daughter can take her first communion.
This is a tale of conflict, of expectation and of struggle. Who will win out in the end? Can it have a good ending? You will just have to read it to find out.
This book is great for fans of Australian thrillers, especially set in small towns like The Dry and Scrublands. It has the potential to go big like they did. In fact, I will put it out there, I think that this is a better story and more well crafted book than The Dry but then again, I was never a fan.

Il y a quelques clichés mais c'est un très bon divertissement. C'est quand même rare qu'à la fin d'un livre je lâche un "huh?!?"

Captivating from the get go. A mystery/thriller set in a remote Western Australian town. Gotta say the ending was a bit of a letdown, possibly a cliffhanger, although maybe you're just meant to decide the ending for yourself. I'm not sure. A great ride though.
