I can’t say I’ve read anything like this book before. It was suspenseful and thrilling and I have to say- really artfully plotted and a little sly. The WORDS put together in sentences were magical!

The main character Ted is a creepy hermit type that drinks beer, watches monster trucks, visits the nearby woods and talks to his cat Olivia. He lives with his daughter Lauren on Needless Street. We get to hear from the cat’s perspective.

Meanwhile, it’s been 11 years since the disappearance of the lollipop girl in which Ted was a person of interest in the case. He was found to have had an alibi during the disappearance. Meanwhile, the girl’s sister, Dee knows he had something to do with her disappearance, therefore moves in next door to him to do her own investigation.

I was so absorbed in this mystery and did guess one major detail fairly early, but what happens after is just so much more intense and complex. I absolutely loved this book, probably the best thriller I’ve read in a very long time. I would recommend checking trigger warnings but the author wrote with such great care and empathy.

Gosh, I feel completely stunned after reading The Last House on Needless Street. It might have been the first time reading a horror/psychological thriller where I didn't know where to place my loyalties. The characters in this novel were all so deep, incredibly sad and easy to care for.

Broken. This novel falls into you in broken, jagged pieces. You'll scramble to try and fit the them back together, to figure out this great puzzle and have answers. . . you'll be wrong. Some pieces are all wrong and from a different puzzle all together.

This story was meant to be told by Ted, Dee and Olivia and to truly understand you'll need to hear it exactly as they remember it.

Thank you to Netgalley and Macmillan for the eARC.

Much like Nothing But Blackened Teeth, this was a book I was looking forward to reading for quite a while.... only to be sorely disappointed.

I immediately felt like this was not the story I signed up for in the first few pages, and decided to trust my instincts and looked on GR for spoilers. I was hoping maybe it was just a rough start and it got better. Because I really wanted to like this book. I really wanted to read and enjoy it.

Nope. Not even close. This book was not at all what I thought it was and, frankly, has a pretty damn insincere portrayal of mental illness along with a bunch of other shit that I wasn't wanting in this story (or the story I thought I was getting) aka I don't need graphic descriptions of child abuse and torture. Like at all.

The potential story I had thought up in my own head was better than the one this turned out to be.

Disappointing as fuck.

Leans heavy on the mental illness trope. The cat was cool though.

3.5 ⭐ This book is not at all what you would expect. It's definitely very strange. It had a lot of surprises and I appreciated the storyline but I feel like it dragged on.
