unbelievably boring, which is a shame because the synopsis seemed so interesting. getting through this was torture. there was a weird uncomfortable stepsibling romance that came out of nowhere? to be completely honest i was entirely tuned out while reading this, i still don’t know what actually happened. nothing interesting.

While it’s an interesting view into a different culture and a different time period, it’s not a captivating story, and some of the developments are too unsettling.

After hearing such great praise about this book, I decided to give it a shot. It surprised me how quickly I was drawn to the characters and the fantasy element of the book. So historically intriguing and captivating. Definitely worth the read.

This is a lovely story that merges a bit of magic, folklore, romance, and mystery all within Chinese culture. We get to wonder about gradations of good and bad, and glimpse into a form of afterlife. I really loved it.
