Average urban fantasy. It started off with some interesting hooks but failed to develop them in the ways I had hoped it would go. The ending was a disappointment to me due to how rote it felt. Maybe it's because I am used to series where the main character takes a book or three to level up to such a degree, or it is clearly telegraphed that there is more than meets the eye in their victory? It had a few hilarious moments. I may check out the next book from the library or on sale.

YES! Now that's what I'm talking about. Thanks for the 3 hours of sleep I got that one night!!!!

I love Pal. I might be insane, not sure, but I do - and every other character is interesting and unique and so well done. And some of the more outlandish stuff like the Jizz Kids had me sputtering loudly in admiration of the fearlessness.

I mean I had read Installing Linux and Sparks - so I was hoping - but more than delivered.

It's really not fair that I can't read the next book right now... hmmm, I might have to go pull some strings.

Well-written, and mostly enjoyable, except that the main antagonist is an idiot. He should have just used a memory charm on Jessie, rather than threatening her or warning her off. It also suffers from "unique chosen one" issues, but those were mostly well-integrated, so I'll withhold judgment until I see how they're handled in the sequel.

Side note: her unique status would probably have broken through the memory charm, and then the rest of the plot could have happened, without the antagonist seeming a complete idiot.

To be perfectly honest, I expected this to be a mediocre book - it had an interesting premise, enough that I bought the book, but I didn't expect the total awesomeness that was in store. The heroine Jessie is delightfully sarcastic, and some of the spells she casts are hilarious. She is strong, despite everything that happens, and instead of giving up, she gets angry. And kudos to the author for having her get damaged in battle and not magically come out perfectly healed. Her familiar, Palimpsest is the perfect foil for her character.

If you enjoy lots of action, battles with heaven and hell, and tons of sarcasm, this is the book for you!

Some really quirky original ideas and would read a sequel - but not totally in love with the book.

You, Jessie Shimmer, are no Harry Dresden.
