I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. I haven't read the previous book in this series bu that hasn't impacted on the reading of this one.
The author sets the scene surrounding DI Ridpath and his place in the police force. He is a likeable character and well defined. The opening scenes of the book are full of impact in more ways than one and this continues throughout the book. I loved the way different branches of the police are portrayed and the internal wrangling that Lee describes so well.
It is realistic in how events unfold and I had no idea of who the girl was. I intend to go back and read the first book in the series and will be eagerly waiting for more

The second outing for DI Ridpath sees Manchester on the brink of gang warfare and whilst he tries to patch up his marriage and neither situation starts well after he is the witness to a road accident which raises tensions even further.
The heart of the book is about Ridpath trying the balance work, domestic bliss and his health and trying to prioritize everyone! The gang side of the story is interesting with no-one wanting the city to explode but as the book progresses it seems to be like a pressure cooking just waiting to lift.
I love the fact that he is desperately trying to win back the trust of wife and daughter and that's exactly what they want as well and it does give a gripping story an even better sense of realism.
Even the little football jibes were enjoyable for some light relief. Definitely recommended.

With his marriage on the rocks Ridpath is juggling with trying to get his family back together, his job with the Coroner’s office and his loyalty to the GMP Major Incident Team. He’s driving over to see his daughter when a near naked man runs onto the M60 right in front of his car.
The police think it’s a drug fuelled accident. Even his beloved MIT think it’s an accident. Still something’s not right. Ridpath is sure he saw someone else at the side of the motorway but there’s no trace.
Ridpath rubs everyone up the wrong way in this one but he’s determined to find out what really happened. In the midst of a possible turf war of Manchester gangs Ridpath ploughs his own furrow to find out what is really happening and how he can solve this case.
Well written, fast paced this is another cracking read from M J Lee.
My grateful thanks go to Canelo for inviting me to read and providing eCopies of two of the D I Ridpath series (#1 & #3) via NetGalley.
The 2nd book was purchased.
All thoughts are my own and no payment has been received for these reviews.

Where the Dead Fall is the second book in the DI Ridpath series and happens to be even better than the preceding novel. It's a compelling page-turner with many twists, turns and ample misdirection to keep the reader guessing and there is more action than you can shake a stick at. With fast pacing, an interesting and unusual protagonist and a superbly crafted, exciting yarn, crime fiction aficionados will find a lot of enjoyment within these pages. I never thought I would say this, but I very much enjoyed the politics surrounding policing which come across as well researched and realistic.
Many thanks to Canelo for an ARC.

This is my first Ridpath novel, and it was a good one! I don't read a lot of mysteries, but I enjoyed this. Excellent plot with tasty twists, including well-written heart pounding segments, and a great ending. The characters were well-crafted, and had good dialog. The author is obviously very talented, and I look forward to his next work (after I circle back to the previous in the series). Recommended.
Thanks very much for the ARC for review!

From page one this crime thriller packed one hell of a punch, it didn't even lull you into a false sense of security which got the heart racing and myself as the reader completely and utterly gripped! It begins with a prologue type chapter from an individual who has been kidnapped and is trying to escape. From that point the book was an almighty rollercoaster of twists.
The chapters are labelled in days of an investigation which allows you to keep up to date with the sequence of events as it unfolds, with a dual type narrative that gave breadcrumbs of details that kept you hooked on every word. What a whirlwind. I completely fell in love with detective inspector Thomas Ridpath who has recently been through the ringer, he's intelligent and I admired him for sticking to his detective guns when everyone else was trying to brush off his thoughts on a case of a death and a man with a gun on the motorway! He has recently gone back to work after having treatment for cancer, I think a lot of his team are brushing him off and his ability to remember things correctly is constantly questioned, this is partly due to his colleagues thinking what he saw was down to stress and / or the drugs he takes, I think this pushes him to show he can still do his job; cancer remission or not.
I liked that MJ Lee has research things that may seem trivial, for instance the way MIT is set up, as well as forensic pathology. This, for me allows a sense of authenticity within the novel, although I know all crime thriller writers research this type of thing, MJ appears to have fully emerged himself into making sure aspects are factually correct. This reader really appreciated that attention to detail! Thank-you!
Now we have our hero, now the villains; well aren't they another slice of evil? I felt that they were pretty much masterminds of crime and murder. The perfect ratio of light and dark in this action packed crime thriller, the more you dig into the storyline the more you can feel yourself getting sucked in to its fast paced cat and mouse type narrative. It's very excellent!
Where The Dead Fall is an enjoyably compelling read filled to the brim with surprises and twists. This is a crime thriller not to be missed!

I totally enjoyed reading this book. It was full of detail, like being on a roller coaster ride with plenty going on and set around Manchester. I got into the book straight away which is always a good sign for me and the writing was very descriptive.
DI Ridpath is driving to pick up his daughter when he gets involved in a motorway accident and everything snowballs from there. He is the first on scene so makes major decisions to prevent the crime scene from being contaminated although his decisions are questioned by higher authority.
The investigations lead DI Ridpath to query various aspects and asks some serious questions of the police force and their procedures whilst still trying to get his job done.
It's an interesting story and holds your attention because you want to know what happens next. Now I will go back to read book 1 and add this author to my watch list for future books.
