Stunning. Disgusting yet relatable… promise I’m not insane. If you’re squeamish at all do not read this - extremely gory. But it was so so wonderful. Otessa Mossfegh esque storytelling, ghosts, and a wife who just wants her mother in law gone… what more could you want! Also, if you thought Nightbitch was lacking, I say this deserves a try!

I cannot believe Abby gets away with killing Janet!

Motherthing has some great dark comedy. It blatantly addresses some triggering topics listed in the trigger section below.
If you like deranged protagonists with mental health issues and mommy trauma this is the book for you!!
Most of the book is from Abby’s perspective which truly makes things terrifying as you can tell that her dedication to putting Ralph, and Ms. Bondy on pedestals destroys her own sense of hypocrisy. In the end she cannot accept that the “family” she is creating and “fixes” is imperfect

A woman who has become her mother, devotes herself to saving a man that is becoming his mother.

Husband and wife with mommy issues, the house may or may not be haunted in the literal sense with the ghost of the man's mother after her suicide, but it most certainly is in the metaphorical sense.

Depression as a haunting and BPD, psychosis, obsession, worship, low self-worth, mother wounds and trauma as a possession - wow, that is a perfect way to parallel the horrors of a horror with the horrors of being in our reality. If Ghosts and demons and exorcists transferred to our real human being experiences they would most certainly be like this.

I enjoyed this through and through.

Boooooo 🍅🍅🍅  so sick of this genre. This and A Certain Hunger by Chelsea G. Summers… can we come up with something else?

Seriously so fun. Definitely fits in the category of books- unhinged women. Highly recommend.

Note- has many dark parts, do not recommend for -see trigger warnings-

I think this book had a lot of promise. The premise was captivating, the cover bold, and yet the actual book did not live up to this.

I felt that this book started at an unusual time, we are meeting the characters immediately after Laura commits suicide. We don’t get to know the actual character of Laura, we learn about her through Abby. It didn’t make sense to me how we were supposed to understand their relationship when we didn’t get to witness it at all through the book. Unfortunately, this wasn’t the only weak plot point. The book was chaotic, and I wondered whether half of what was happening was real at all. The writing style is quirky, and uses an abundance of metaphors which was unnecessary.

The book is marketed as a horror, but really it is about Abby’s desperation of never having a mother and wanting to become the best mother she can be. This seems to be a book that many people are enjoying, it unfortunately was not for me.

Thank you to Netgalley and Atlantic Book for the copy of this book. My review is honest and unbiased.
