omg just make chicken i beg x
On the real though, I expected a more lighthearted gory comedy about a woman being haunted by her MIL, but got a character study of a woman who has a very distorted view of the world, her relationships, and herself as an individual. Quite shocking (to me, who doesn’t read much horror), but definitely worth the read :) A tiny bit slow for the first half though.

This is, without question, one of the weirdest things I've ever read. Definitely enjoyed it though!

[cw: SA, grief, portrayals of ableism?, emotional abuse, violent thoughts, suicidal thoughts, depression, mentions of BPD, gross bodily imagery, descriptions of eye trauma, cannibalism]

(3.5) Wow. What a relentless deep dive into the most toxic parts of cisgender relationships (as the narrator views them) and heteronormativity, as well as codependent parents (mainly mothers) and (well, frankly, the white people version of) intergenerational trauma.

It was poetically written, with interesting uses of imagery and (((diction))), and sections of screenplay (used fairly well, never feeling too jarring) throughout. I often pick up horror novels and am always surprised when there’s suddenly cannibalism, but to be honest I probably should’ve known from the food on the cover what I was likely getting myself into, lmao.

I mostly read it out loud to my partner on a long drive, and we were enraptured. I will say that we, personally, both are uncomfortable with eye trauma so I skipped over a section around the middle of the book where Abby describes a thought she has about ripping out part of her eye, and how she’d cook it… I read it silently to myself, horrified, and then resumed when the description ended.

Overall, a pretty effective examination of its subject—I had some other minor things that bothered me, but I’ll add them to my review after thinking some more about this experience.

However, I never want to have a plate of chicken a la king. Ever. Lol.
