Story told in diary form about finding solace in nature, this should have been all of my catnip. And there are small pools of loveliness here: the garden descriptions and Elizabeth’s return to her childhood home are both standouts. But it’s couched in so much privilege, classism, snobbery and misogyny (both internalized and overt) that I truly couldn’t enjoy most of this short work. Elizabeth being casually cruel to a houseguest she invited and likening servants to children and animals were awful. Plus, the stupid husband (known as the Man of Wrath in the text) was much more the Man of Smug Self-Satisfaction. Blerg…my 2022 reading life is off to a dismal start. At least it can only go up from here, right?
