Just For the Summer was exactly what I have come to expect from an Abby Jimenez book - a lovely emotional rollercoaster with a beautiful romance at its center. 

Once again, she has written a giant simp of a man and at this point, y'all should already know that I'm here for it. Justin got hit by the love truck so fast, and as soon as they met each other I knew they would be an adorable couple. Emma learns so much about herself throughout the book, and the fact that she went through so much and came out as well as she did is a testament to post-traumatic growth theory.

I'm stuck on reviewing this book because on the one hand, Emma was so relatable, but on the other, her experiences were actually very triggering to me as someone who also had an emotionally neglectful parent. So I'm not sure if I liked this book or if it just made me feel things.

Emma says choose empathy over anger, but like... Sometimes anger can be justified. Sometimes you can be angry AND feel empathy at the same time. And ultimately, empathy doesn't mean having no boundaries and letting your abuser walk all over you and repeat the same mistakes over and over again. I literally said "thank GOD!" out loud when Emma finally started seeing a therapist.

This was NOT a light summer romance read 😂 I ugly cried toward the end, and didn't expect to need to talk to MY therapist about this one 🤣

This romance captured me from the beginning and didn't disappoint.  As with all of this author's books, the subject was more profound.  In this case, it was mental health and the trauma of being a foster child.  The characters were flawed and lovely.  The flirting, both in text and IRL, was delightful.  Even though the book was over 400 pages, it was a quick read.

I am not usually one for this kind of romance book but I got it from a book-a-month subscription and honestly this was so cute and heartwarming. I admit I teared up. Definitely cheesy but not to a detrimental degree. And Maddy is a real one.

Emma reads a Reddit post by Justin about how they are both "cursed" with being the relationship before their exes find "The One." They connect and find themselves in the same city, but just for the summer. They make a plan to do an experiment: to date each other, so that the next person they meet will be their soulmate.

This book is totally worth all the hype. I've loved every book in this series, but I think that I fell for Justin the hardest. This shows that dating can be intentional even in the chaos of everyday life and how love sometimes grows unexpectedly.

I would definitely recommend reading the trigger warnings for this book. I appreciated the authenticity & complicated feelings that came with the extended families in this book. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who loves a great romance!
