I don't know how to talk about this book without spoilers. I gave it a 4. It was very good, but make sure you are emotionally prepared before reading.
I honestly thought this was going to have a happy ending. I know it is the titanic, so I should have known what I was getting into, but after reading the Downstairs Girl, which had an almost saccharine ending, I thought this would be similar. I predicted that Valera would would live, but would end up working with April rather than joining the circus. I was very wrong.
I don't know whether I liked the ending or not. It was very emotional, and I felt a little bit lost afterward. This is what I get for picking up a book about the Titanic...
The characters were great and really well developed. The setting was vivid and concrete. It was atmospheric and touching. Just be prepared.
