I never knew where this book was going.

Disappointing. None of the characters were likeable and none of the twists were exciting or something I hadn't already figured out.

This book promised mystery and intrigue but left me feeling a bit lukewarm. The story centres on Celeste Turner, a city girl who inherits a home in rural Florida. When she discovers Daisy, a polite yet enigmatic backpacker, trespassing in her backyard, an unlikely but tenuous friendship forms. Both women are clinging to secrets they'd rather keep hidden, and the discovery of a body nearby forces them to confront their pasts to protect their futures.

I have to admit, the first two-thirds of the book were quite slow for me. I struggled to connect with the characters and couldn't quite figure out who I was meant to be rooting for. The pacing made it a bit of a slog, and I found myself waiting for something to latch onto. However, things did pick up towards the end, bringing some much-needed tension and resolution. If you're someone who doesn't mind a slow burn and enjoys peeling back layers of secrecy, you might find it more engaging than I did.

I found the book entertaining and suspenseful. The narrative style is a little plain for my taste and some things about the ending chapters didn’t quite hold together but felt a little clumsy. Hence, I rated the book 3 stars even while I enjoyed it.

I found it to be a quick enough read but wasn't very invested in the characters or the story and I felt the book had a lot more potential because the plot was great. Nice easy pick, perfect for the business of Christmas.

I really don't think there is anything wrong with this book, it had some interesting twists and turns. The review is totally based on my own feelings towards reading the book, and all I can say is that it didn't captivate me. I never got that feeling of just wanting to keep reading.

O.K. this woman has some wicked skills when it comes to twists! Hats off to you, K. L. Armstrong, you’ve guaranteed that your story will never really leave your readers. Decades from now, we’ll all still look back at the moment you fooled us and the truth was revealed. We’ll be shaking our heads and muttering, “I can’t believe she got me!” The moment I read the twist, I had a ‘wait, WHAT?!’ moment and was immediately forced to re-examine everything I’d read up to that point. EVEN MY EMOTIONS had to be realigned. It was overwhelming and oh, so very good. Deliciously good.

The atmosphere created right from page one pervaded the entire book and I was on the edge of my seat. I’ll be double checking my deadbolt tonight and giving my bedroom the once over before I hop in bed.

I can’t wait to read another book by this talented author - a fellow Canadian!
