Clearly a satire but I did not at all care for the use of women in this book. I guess I've read too much Austen but this book was just not that good. It's obvious focus was meant to be on the industrial revolution but focused more on the pitfalls of men and women
Somewhat grimmer Dickens than I really prefer but very involving story anyway. Poor guy couldn't tell the difference between Benthamites and normal capitalism though.
slow-paced
I would’ve DNF if it wasn’t for school
Probably not the best introduction to Dickens, but not a bad book in the end. The narrator was fantastic!

Dickens' rarely disappoints. In my world, he never disappoints. This novel was no different. This novel had a smaller cast of characters and an easier readability to it than some of his others. It certainly was a quick read. As always the lines of moral goodness are blurred in all Dickens' novels. There are no real villains. All the characters make questionable choices and some great choices. Even the side characters are sitting in the grey. This is an interesting take on unions at the time as well as incorporation of the arts and humanities into an educational world that strive for only perfection in logic and rationality, in usefulness and submission to the needs of society over personal freedoms and emotions. I enjoyed this quite a bit. I took one star off because the ending seemed to be written for sheer length instead of content. This could've been wrapped up faster, if only Dickens' hadn't been paid by the page or words in some cases. Good book to wrap up this 2021 godforsaken year.
I always enjoy Dickens. This wasn't one of my favorites.
