Didn't like reading Dickens at all in high school but like 70% of this book is people talking shit about each other which resonated deeply

A middling Dickens. Supposedly a political novel about industrialisation, I didn't see a lot of this, as it seems more interested in fact vs imagination, in the person of Gradgrind ("we want nothing but Facts, sir") and the impact of his fact-based, fanciless upbringing on his children. As someone more naturally inclined to facts than imagination, I think Dickens perhaps goes a bit too far.

As you'd expect though, it's easy to read, and with a few amusing caricatures, but not up there with his best.

Dickens satires the utilitarianism of 19th century industrial England. This book is shorter than his usual. I have tried to read it a couple of times but couldn't get into it, but I'm glad I have finally finished it. I think I read it wrong, though, and this spoiled the enjoyment. I read the first part in an actual book and enjoyed it, though  some of the characters irritated me. I then switched to audio. It was easier for when I was commuting, but the narrator was awful, and I almost put it down but found another edition with a different narrator who was better, so I quite enjoyed the 3rd part. I probably need to re read it with the actual book, but that's not likely to be anytime soon.
What I will say is Louisa deserved better. Tom didn't deserve Louisa for a sister and Bounderby was insufferable.
