my first "proper" dickens beyond a christmas carol, centres around life in an increasingly industrialized and utilitarian society. while i liked the story, i am glad i audiobooked it as it felt like not much had happened even at 8 hours into the recording, i was always waiting for a big moment and it just wasn't that kind of book (in a way even at the end?)

to begin with I never liked that story. I don't know why it was created. it was to short and predictable. the ending is some what open and vague. would have loved it if there was more details or if the lives of these people were more entangled with a thrill. I was bored reading it and disappointed.

Highly enjoyable, a great take on the industrialisation of The North and a critique of 'rationality' and what happens when you focus on STEM without the humanities. That said, it does have an anti-union theme (Dickens, why?? You were so close) with the apolitical scab Stephen Blackpool being made into a Christlike martyr for 'true' middle-ground moral integrity.

It was Hard Times reading this, I can tell you that.
REALLY not my thing, but I had to read it for uni. And when I say read it, I mean read just 2 chapters and saying 'fuck it'
Bah. I'll watch the movie version. Me and classics don't mix.
