Dickens is Dickens. No one can truly capture the minute detail of every place and every character like he can. A picturesque portrayal of Victorian value. Facts Facts Facts. Nothing but facts! I enjoyed reading this classic work of fiction, attempting to satirize the ridiculous nature of victorian english society. Great read, and a must for those who want to add a little classic literature to their cocktail party conversations, :p.

Hardly the most exhilarating Dickens and pretty transparent. No very interesting characters. Liked Harthouse the best and wish they wrote more books about rakish characters though perhaps we only like them because we only ever know them in passing.

My first read for a Victorian Literature and Culture class! While I really enjoyed Dickens' themes and commentary, he could just be so heavy-handed with everything that I wanted to scream, "I get it!!". But I do have to keep in mind that this novel was published in a different time, so there are different conventions followed.
Hard Times was a surprise page-turner of a novel.
Dickens is at his best here, with a tight pace and compelling storyline that ended neatly and somehow still left me wanting more. His recognizable poetic style is present throughout the novel, but unlike some of his longer works where every line feels florid, the quotable bits in Hard Times jump out and hit you like an emotional sucker punch and the plot keeps on rolling.
Josiah Bounderby read as a Trump-esque figure, which made this book even better. Dickens intended it as a social commentary on his own time, but it's still relevant in 2020.

Behold .. a fantastic argument for CM education.. carrying on.
I really and truly enjoyed this exceedingly short Dickens.. so so many thoughts but they are all stuck up in my head and that is where they shall have to remain for now as I chew on it for days and weeks to come.

Global pandemic is easy compared to smart 20 year old girl getting married off to father's 50 year old friend.
